Credit Repair

Whether you have bad credit or ok credit, repairing it is a must. There are many different ways to go about repairing your credit score and its not something that should be taken lightly. Your credit report and score are two of the most important factors in determining your credit worthiness and ability to pay off debt. Bad and even okay credit can hinder you from getting everything from a personal or home loan to a mortgage or a credit cards.

That is why repairing it is imperative. While people often get discouraged because of bad or low credit, there are ways to vastly improve it and ensure you eventually heal it completely.

If you're patient and take the time to do it right, the entire process can yield excellent results. Whether you choose to use a credit repair company or do it yourself, there are some things to be aware of.

First, if you choose to use a credit repair company, make sure you do your research and get a company that has a good reputation. There are a number of scams and bad companies who will take your money and run, so be sure to check out their status. Do a search for their name plus 'bad' and 'negative' to see if negative posts or articles have been written about them; also check the better business bureau. Call and don't be afraid to ask questions, such as how long they've been in business, references, etc.

Second, read the Fair Credit Reporting Act so you know what your rights are as you go through the credit repair process. It is important to be informed of your rights and abilities as covered by the act. It was made for consumers like you, so take advantage of its presence.

Third, make sure you are committed and organized as you go about repairing your credit. Keep a file of all correspondence between you and creditors or credit reporting agencies; record dates, times and names of people you talk to and get a copy of your report from each of the major credit reporting companies.

When dealing with creditors and credit reporting agencies, maintain your cool and don't make any threats unless you mean to follow through. The cooler and more logical you remain, the easier it will be for you. And be firm; you will have to talk to people who will try to brush you off, so don't be afraid to assert yourself.

Whether you decide to hire a credit repair company or do it yourself, understand that there will be a lot of work involved and that it will be a long, drawn out process. Expect to spend at least several months dealing with it. Being organized and following through will greatly aid you, and if you don't want to do it yourself, choose a company that is in good standing with the better business bureau, has verifiable references, and complies and understands the Fair Credit Reporting Act
